Control Issues - CCK08

This weeks issue on Control has been hotly debated and discussed and complained about. That tells me it is an excellent issue and was given to the participants in this course in exactly the right way.

My original post on this subject was a gut reaction to having been forced to archive many conversations that I did not ask for. Did I learn something in the process? Of Course. Many of us have been in our warm fuzzy little networks, we have grown use to certain expectations, and we do not like those changes that disrupt our environment. I am a person of pattern, I make sure my life follows guidelines and specific actions, I like knowing what is going to happen.

Monday changed that for me, someone else controlled my existence. Which is not in my opinion good, for two reasons:

1. I am an only child and I like having things my way
2. I am a teacher in my classroom, and we never like being told what
to do ever...

Even though this is a valuable experience, which has taught me to roll with the punches, and move along, because networks are constantly changing, growing, expanding, coming into contact with new networks, etc... They will never be the same twice and if people are not aware of this, then they are doomed to fail with network learning. So I ask myself, what type of learning do I feel more comfortable with. Based on my gut reactions, most likely Groups, however I have come to the realization that I need to expand or be forced into the silo effect I have warned about before. However the growing, maintaining and validating of networks takes time. Time I do not have in abundance, which forces one to accept groups more easily than networks.

However the large portion of the post was to lead into my final comments about Connectivism in K-12. I still believe that Connectivism will require to much power to be lost by the Teacher in terms of legal responsibilities. I am where the buck stops, if anything untoward happens, it lands on my shoulders. Regardless of how interesting an theory this is, one must always remember the big picture and that includes the legal issues forced onto all Schools not teaching adults...

If you have any suggestions, comments, ideas, let me know...
