Group Mentality -CCK08
Just remembered about the CCK08 uStream wrap-up
sessions and currently listening to Week 3. George just stated we have
"Different types of intelligence when we function alone" than when we
function as a group. I have stopped the recording at this point
(27:23), I am not sure if they move the conversation into this
direction yet, but I will post regardless.
The premise is if we are alone we have different intelligence than when we are with a group/network. However, the opposite then must be true, if we are with a group/network our intelligence will be different than when we are alone. Here lies the problem, we are social animals, we look to cling onto the bright shiny spot of any group/network, hence the concepts of group mentality and the more dangerous one mob mentality.
I have yet to see it, but networked learning can easily be plagued by both of these, which will lower diversity (group mentality) or destroy the network (mod mentality). What can be done to ensure the lure of conformity is reduced to greater the chance that the network will survive?
